Recently we conducted a survey of the patients of Family Care Network, about their interest in Internet communication with their doctor and nurse. Thank you all for helping us to get this interesting information! As a result of this information, we are updating our web site, and plan to make web based communication a part of our service whenever that can be done confidentially and appropriately.

  1. 576 of our patients completed questionnaires. 70% were female, 30% were male.
  2. 73 % of our patients have easy access to the Internet, 72% of females, 76% of males.
  3. 90% of those under 20. 75% of those 20-40. 83% of those 41-60. 45% of those 61-80. 38% 0f those >81!
  4. Among our patients, 76% females, and 70% males would like Internet access to their doctor or nurse for routine health care concerns.

When looked at by age, 87% of those under 20, 84% of those 20-40, 77% of those 41-60, 41% of those 61-80, and 25% of those over 81 would like Internet access to their doctor or nurse !

We interpret these findings to show that our patients at FCN have more access to the Internet than patients of other practices where this has been looked at. The results also show that our patients are more interested than the average person from prior surveys in having Internet access to their health care providers. When we combine these findings with the fact new software opportunities are available, and that the doctors of FCN are also interested in using the Internet to facilitate communication with their patients, it looks like the time is right for us to move forward in this direction.
