Dr. Carlos Montiel will join North Sound Family Medicine in August 2011. Dr. Montiel, a board certified family physician, comes to us from Columbia Basin Hospital and Family Medicine, in Ephrata, Washington, where he had practiced since July of 2008. Dr. Monteil moved to the United States with his family from Venezuela when he was seven years old. He went to medical school at the University of the Andes in Merida, Venezuela and completed his residency at the University of Texas at Galveston, where he was the Chief Resident from 2007-2008. During his residency Dr. Montiel had the opportunity to work in clinics in central Texas and in Nicaragua. He received the Global Health Scholar Award for Excellence and Commitment to Global Health in 2008 from the University of Texas.
In 2002 Dr. Montiel visited friends in Bellingham and fell in love with the area. He hoped that some day he could move to Bellingham with his family and practice medicine here.
Dr. Montiel says: My goal is to provide the highest level of quality and evidence-based medical care. I treat my patients just as I would like my family to be treated. I believe that an honest and open patient-physician relationship gives me insight into the lives and goals of the patients and families that I treat, allowing me to provide care that makes sense to them. I believe that Family Medicine is a combination of modern medical science and the traditional roles of healer and counselor, allowing for holistic and integrated delivery of health care.
In his free time Dr. Montiel enjoys time with his wife and daughter, traveling, reading, learning about different cultures, and collecting aviation scale models. He also loves to spend time outdoors, camping, riding bikes, walking and spending time on the lake in his little boat.
His favorite quote is, “In the sick room, ten cents’ worth of human understanding equals ten dollars’ worth of medical science.” - Martin H. Fischer
