Dr. Lisa Van Hofwegen has joined Bellingham Bay Family Medicine!
Dr. VanHofwegen received her Medical Degree from the University of Iowa Carver College of Medicine, in June of 2004, and completed her residency in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Iowa in 2007. She chose the specialty of family medicine because she enjoys working in the outpatient setting and family medicine offers a wide range of patient interactions that keeps the practice of medicine fresh and exciting. Dr. Van Hofwegen especially enjoys preventive medicine, and enjoys seeing patients of all ages.
Dr. Van Hofwegen graduated summa cum laude with a BA from Northwestern College in Iowa City, Iowa.
During medical school, she worked with a mission organization in Peru, doing public health in the rain forest and learning Spanish. Between her second and third year of medical school, she took time off to do public health research with the Center for Disease Control. She worked for 2 years doing locum tenens for a group of family practice clinics in Iowa after graduating from residency.
Dr. Van Hofwegen is a native of Nooksack, and is thrilled to be back in the Pacific Northwest after a long "exile" to the Midwest. She met her husband, Chris, during college, and they did their medical training together, Chris completing an orthopedic surgery residency. For the past two years she has been at home with her 3 small children, moving for her husband's job. She is eager to establish a practice now that they are settled in Bellingham. She and her husband are excited to introduce their young family to the outdoor activities available here and recently bought a back pack to carry their baby in during family hikes. They are enjoying the milder climate as well of the views of Bellingham Bay and the mountains that the area has to offer. Outside of work, Lisa loves to read, cook and involve herself with her church.
