Edward W. Bloom, MD

I grew up in the small town of Ketchikan in Southeast Alaska, where I spent my summers processing salmon to pay for college. I did my undergraduate studies at the University of Washington and then continued south to complete medical school and residency at Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. While in residency, I met my wife (Dr. Jessica Bloom) and after completing our medical training we spent four years on active duty in the U.S. Air Force stationed in San Antonio, Texas. During this time, I deployed to Saudi Arabia during Operation Southern Watch and Operation Iraqi Freedom. After completing our military service, we came to Bellingham in 2005.

I am fortunate to live in this amazing part of the world and to practice in our dynamic medical community. My practice includes outpatient medical care for all ages, in-office surgical procedures, and delivering babies. I find providing OB care particularly rewarding — we started our family just prior to moving to Bellingham (one born in Texas and two here) and our children have grown up alongside those I have seen in my practice. Jessica and I enjoy celebrating our patients’ growth and successes as much as we do cheering on our own kids.

Aside from caring for whole families and providing care during pregnancy, my other medical interests include sports medicine and diabetes management. I provide several in-office procedures, including fracture care casting and splinting, joint injections, IUD insertions and removals, endometrial biopsies, several types of skin surgery and mole removal, and circumcision. I also offer no-scalpel vasectomy.

I am proud to be a board-certified family physician and have been awarded the degree of Fellow of the American Academy of Family Medicine. I am a past chairman of the St. Joseph Medical Center Department of Family Medicine, a board member of our local medical society, and hold a faculty appointment with the Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine teaching medical students.

My wife and I keep occupied with a myriad of activities and adventures with our children. I have also become a distance runner, road biker, baker, and a mediocre guitar player.

I am privileged to care for patients from age zero to 103 with all ranges of issues and illnesses. My goal as a family physician is to be there for my patients on their worst day, their best day, and at the beginning and end of life. This is not always possible, but I strive for this whenever I can.

Dr. Bloom is proud to provide OB care. When OB care is provided by a family physician, it is unique in many ways! Learn more.
