Joy Welty, MD
I grew up on a farm in the beautiful Susquehanna Valley of Pennsylvania. After graduating from high school, I enlisted in the army. I graduated from Millersville University and spent time as a pharmacy and pathology technician, cancer researcher, and mother of two children. I attended medical school at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia (now Sydney Kimmel). I began a surgical residency in urology at Penn State Health in Hershey, PA, and then transferred from active army into the National Guard as a field surgeon.
I switched into primary care and did a family medicine residency with obstetrics after realizing I wanted more holistic patient care and patient continuity, which took me to a program in Billings, MT. I continued with the National Guard and retired from military service at the same time I was finishing my medical residency.
I joined Family Care Network because I value their philosophy of shared decision-making between physician and patient. I also wanted to be closer to family and some of my favorite recreational activities, such as kayaking, boating, sailing, hiking, biking, and trail running. I also enjoy designing and making stained glass lamps and windows, singing, playing flute, reading, and baking.
