Karena L. Whitworth, MD
After being born and raised in Kodiak, Alaska, I decided to go to college in Bellingham – which is the closest I could be to Alaska while technically being out of state! I earned a degree in biological anthropology from Western Washington University then moved east to Chicago for medical school at Rush Medical College. I decided I preferred the mild winters of the Pacific Northwest and came back to this area for residency. I finished my training at Valley Family Medicine in Renton. I’m excited to return to Bellingham and join Family Health Associates!
I have two main philosophies about being a family physician: the patient and the doctor are partners in health; and preventative medicine is the foundation of a healthy life. I believe my role as a physician is to advise and support my patients while allowing them to be the main director of their health. When preventative medicine and a healthy lifestyle aren’t enough, we will work together to find the best treatment.
My favorite thing about being a family physician is the variety of patients. I enjoy caring for women throughout pregnancy and delivery, then caring for the baby as they grow. I also enjoy working with older patients to navigate changes in health. From babies to the elderly and everyone in between, the variety of ages and reasons for visits keeps me on my toes!
My family includes my husband, stepson and our two goats, three cats and two French bulldogs. We love exploring and look forward to getting re-acquainted with the Bellingham area. We also love to travel; our goal is one international trip per year.
