Tyler Barreto, MD

I was born and raised in Indiana, moved to Iowa where I attended Grinnell College, and then medical school at Michigan State University. I completed my residency in Grand Rapids, Michigan followed by a fellowship at Georgetown University. After completing my training, I taught at family medicine residency programs in San Antonio, Texas and Marysville, Washington. I practiced in rural British Columbia for a couple of years before moving back to Washington to join Family Health Associates.

I love being a family doctor because I get to build relationships with people of all ages and at all stages of life, starting with birth. I believe patients and their primary care physician are a team working together to achieve each patient’s health goals. This teamwork is important so we can develop prevention, diagnosis, and treatment plans that are both evidence-based and right for each person. Effective prevention and treatment plans always include lifestyle modifications, so I encourage exercise, mental health support, and time outside.

I am also passionate about research. My research is focused on supporting family physicians to continue practicing obstetric care. I believe obstetric care with a family doctor is special because we have long term relationships with our patients and their families. Having been through labor myself, I’m glad my family doctor was there with me when I was in pain and vulnerable. Though I am most passionate about obstetrics, I’ve also researched things like point of care ultrasound, migraine treatment, and treating depression in children and adolescents.

My partner and I decided to move back to the U.S. from his childhood home in northern British Columbia. We settled on Bellingham because it is a great fit for our family –- with the outdoor lifestyle, spectacular beauty, and proximity to our Canadian family. When I’m not at work, you can find me hiking, paddling, exploring the beautiful Bellingham trails, traveling, and reading.
